SLIPPERY SLOPES!
FAITH PROMISE MISSIONARIES Paul & Karan Davis, TEAM, France
·
Sunday, February
27: It happened so quickly. One moment we were walking down a beautiful
snow-covered mountain road, the next moment Karan was sprawled on
the ground in pain. She had slipped and fallen, twisting her delicate left
leg (yes, the one with the prosthesis). She dared not move. Another
hiker went to get help. A ski patroller arrived, carefully got Karan on a
rescue sled, and took her to the medical center for x-rays — nothing
broken and prosthesis intact, but severe sprain. Now, almost four weeks later,
she can carefully walk again with a crutch in hand to ensure stability. We
are very grateful that it was not worse!
·
Saturday, March
12: The house started to shake, followed by a loud boom. What was that? We went
outside and saw neighbors wondering the same thing. It was an earthquake
of magnitude 4.2 with the epicenter right here in our town of Mercury! We
felt other tremors a bit later, and then things calmed down. We are grateful
that we didn’t have any damage.
· Monday, March 21:
For over a week, trucks had been coming down the dirt road in front of our
house to deposit dirt from a nearby construction site. We heard a
weird shrieking sound followed by a thud and an acrid odor. A truck
had slipped on the adjacent slope and turned over! We are grateful that
no one was hurt (including the driver!).
These events
serve as reminders that life is very uncertain. One false step, one
climatic event, one wrong turn can turn our lives upside down (literally!).
Our world is
on a slippery slope.
Here in France, the situation in Ukraine brings vivid reminders of World War
II, with Ukraine only 900 miles away. Refugees are fleeing to many
European countries, including France. The Pontcharra Church is
taking an active role in welcoming refugees and sending supplies to Ukraine.
Pray for us
as we share the Biblical perspective expressed in Hebrews 6:18-20, “…that
we who have fled (to God) for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold
fast to the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of
the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain,
where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf…”.
Cleats might
have prevented Karan from falling, our good foundation kept our house from
moving, the truck driver could have been more careful driving the truck, but only
Jesus as our anchor will keep us from slipping in these difficult days. Pray
with us that many in France would turn to Jesus, the “sure and steadfast
anchor of the soul!”
